Grand Am-style road racing is making a big comeback in terms of popularity here in the U.S. It’s the only place to see Camaros, Mustangs, and Challengers battling their European and Japanese competitors in a no-holds-barred contest of mechanical badassery. Ford has had a lot of success so far from its fleet of race-ready Boss 302 track cars, as had Rehagen Racing.

Unfortunately, news out of Mid-Ohio for the Rehagen Racing team is not good. Jalopnik posted this video/photo collage of the Rehagen Racing #52 Boss 302 leaving the track during a test lap and slamming hard into a tire barrier wall.

We don’t have any word on the driver’s condition or what caused the accident, although it is clear from the video that the #52 Boss Mustang came into the corner WAY too fast. Just look at how quickly it is moving compared to the other cars who made the corner. There was never any hope for that Mustang making that turn at the rate of speed it was going.

Was the throttle stuck open? Did the brakes fail? We don’t know, though we have a hard time believing a trained, professional race driver would go into a corner like that at those speeds. We’re betting some sort of mechanical failure is behind this high-speed crash, though we must admit the Mustang survived the accident in better-than-expected condition. Hopefully the driver did too.
