NMCA Reveals Mickey Thompson Heavy Street Class For Modern Muscle

Expanding on the factory-wars concept of the Factory Super Cars eliminator, the National Muscle Car Association, with the support of Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels, has revealed an exciting an unique new class aimed directly at the modern high-performance, street-legal vehicles that are available right off the showroom floor.

Heavy Street is slated to make its debut at the NMCA All-American Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio in August; the class is designed for modern IRS-equipped muscle cars and sedans — the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, and even the Cadillac CTS-V and Pontiac G8, to name a few. As the NMCA is clear to point out, the focus is on true street cars in street trim — no gutted interiors or the like.

“We have seen a tremendous amount of sales of ET Radials for 17-inch and larger wheels, so we know enthusiasts are excited about racing their late-model cars,” commented Tom Kundrik, director of motorsports at Mickey Thompson Tires. “Heavy Street gives those cars a place to race and compete against similar cars.”

Vehicles competing in Heavy Street will be required to meet a 4,000-pound minimum weight and run on a minimum 17-inch diameter rear wheel, clad in DOT-approved tires. The original engine platform for the make and model must be retained, and power adders are a virtually anything-goes affair, with single or dual power sources permissible. Like the engine, the transmission is also required to be of original spec for the vehicle.

The category will also feature a unique format that will forego a traditional qualifying ladder.

“We are using a different type of format for Heavy Street. The class will run as a heads-up eliminator but there will be no qualifying ladder,” commented Rollie Miller, general manager and event director of NMCA. “Competitors will make three qualifying runs to get their car tuned up but not formally put on an elimination ladder. The pairings on Sunday will be randomly selected using chips pulled from a hat, much like we do in Outlaw True Street and No Time competitions.”

Like True Street, Heavy Street will complete a 25- to 30-mile cruise to prove the street-ability of the vehicles. The class will compete over the 1/4-mile, with a .400 pro tree and a 32-car field.

Specifically, Heavy Street is open to 2015-18 Ford Mustang, 2015-18 Chevrolet Camaro, 2005-2018 Dodge Challenger/Charger/300C/Magnum, Cadillac CTS-V (all years), 2013-17 Chevrolet S/S, and the Pontiac G8 (all years). IRS suspension is required, but aftermarket center sections are permitted. Bolt-in front suspension in the factory location is required, and stock-style interior must be retained. Vehicles must be registered, insured, and licensed.

At this time, the class is only scheduled to participate at the All-American Nationals, but the NMCA staff, which is continually evaluating trends in the drag racing landscape, confirm that car-count and spectator interest at its debut event could lead to additional appearances in the future.

The NMCA has posted the complete ruleset for Heavy Street online, which can be viewed here.
