The 216-MPH Ford GT Is The Fastest Production Ford Ever

Not only is the new Ford GT the fastest production Ford ever built at 216 mph, but it also bested some of its supercar competition from Ferrari and McLaren on the same test track.

Though the production cars are already being built, Ford kept the final performance ratings of the latest Ford GT close to the vest—until now. Good things come to those who wait, so if you are one of the lucky future owners of the next-gen supercar, you’ll have the opportunity to drive the fastest production Ford ever created.

“Our expectation has always been that the EcoBoost V6 would perform exceptionally well in the Ford GT—both in terms of power as well as aerodynamic efficiency,” Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance, said. “We tested and developed this powertrain through the Daytona Prototype race car that ran in IMSA for two seasons, last season racing with Ford GT. We are extremely pleased with how it performs, both on the track and on the road.”

The Ford Performance halo car reaches a top speed of 216 mph thanks to its combination of active aerodynamics and suspension, plus the SAE-rated thrust of an EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 engine generating 647 horsepower and 550 lb-ft of torque. (Not too shabby for a V6, right?)

Not only is it the fastest Ford built yet, but during development testing Ford says the latest GT also bested its supercar competition at Calabogie Motorsports Park in Canada. Engineers prepped a Ford GT, a Ferrari 458 Speciale and a McLaren 675LT with similar setups, including fresh tires and tuned-up suspension settings. With the same driver, the GT lapped the track in 2:09.8, edging the McLaren at 2:10.88 and putting more distance on the Ferrari 458 Speciale’s 2:12.9 lap.

“The Ford GT is all about performance,” Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president, global product development and chief technical officer, said. “We achieved considerable weight savings with the carbon fiber architecture. We then reinvested some of that savings into where it counts most—performance, specifically, the active dynamics. The result is an even faster car.”

It is definitely hard to argue with those results!

A calling card of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 is its broad powerband, which is said to deliver 90 percent of its peak torque from 3,500 rpm.
